Critical Illness Cover
Pays a tax-free lump sum if you are diagnosed with a listed serious illness.
Critical illness cover pays out on diagnosis (not death) of one of the conditions listed in the policy, typically cancer, heart attack, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and major organ failure. The Association of British Insurers sets minimum definitions, but the full list varies by insurer. It is materially more expensive than term assurance because claims are more frequent. Often sold as a rider alongside life cover. Best suited to those without sufficient sick pay, savings, or income protection to bridge a long period away from work. For most workers, income protection (which pays a monthly income while you cannot work) is a stronger first choice.
